About Chincoteague, VA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!

Chincoteague Island is a serene vacationer destination with no high rises, boardwalks, or traffic jams. It is Virginia's only resort Island and is situated on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Chincoteague is the gateway to the Virginia section of Assateague Island, the habitat of the famous Chincoteague Wild Ponies. Chincoteague offers a tranquil ambiance and the exquisiteness of untouched scenery. From relaxing on the coast to viewing an impressive sunset over the Chincoteague Bay, there is by no means a scarcity of things to do in Chincoteague.  Do not let its small size and charming setting fool you. The seasonal weather means that there are new things to do with each passing month. Suntans and beach umbrellas are the names of the game in the summer while locals bundle up a bit in the winter for their outdoor adventures.

The city features various small hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds that provide visitors to the region with safe and welcoming accommodations. The island also features many restaurants, miniature golf courses, ice cream shops and other expected beachside spots. There are two museums on the island: Beebe Ranch and the Museum of Chincoteague Island. Wallops Island Flight Facility is the launch site for the Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo module used to resupply the International Space Station. This site draws in many tourists when launches are scheduled.

The feral ponies on Assateague Island are the inspiration for much legend and lore and some believe that they are offspring of survivors of a Spanish galleon that sank on its way to Spain during a storm in the 1700s. However, they are actually believed to be descended from domesticated stock that was brought to the island by farmers so that they could avoid fencing requirements and levies.  In the Pony Penning, which is held annually the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of the month, the horses swim across the water connecting the islands. It is very shallow but if an animal is too small or weak to make the swim, it is put on a barge and ferried over to the other side. Then, they run through town and herded into a pen.  The swim event occurs on Wednesday. The following day, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company auctions that year's foals. Then, on Friday, the remaining ponies swim back to Assateague. The island gained nationwide celebrity in 1961 with the movie, “Misty of Chincoteague.” The film was based on novelist Marguerite Henry's esteemed children's book “Misty of Chincoteague,” which she wrote in 1947 while staying at Miss Molly's Inn helped to forever change Chincoteague Island from a little fishing village into a top-notch tourist destination.
